Federal Government destroys 2.5 tonnes elephant tusks in historic conservation effort

The Federal Government has executed its inaugural ivory crush, obliterating 2.5 tonnes of confiscated elephant tusks and ivory, weighing approximately 2,436kg.

The event, held in Abuja, signifies a crucial step in Nigeria’s battle against illegal ivory trade and the preservation of its endangered elephant population.

Spearheaded by the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency in collaboration with the Elephant Protection Initiative Foundation, this initiative follows the public destruction of four tonnes (3914.08kg) of seized pangolin scales three months ago. Minister of State for Environment, Iziaq Adekunle Salako, emphasized Nigeria’s resolute commitment to wildlife conservation and the uncompromising stance against wildlife trafficking.
