Nigerian President, Governors urged to implement policies for waste conversion in fight against climate change
Waste to be converted to animal feeds, energy

In an effort to combat climate change and promote sustainable agricultural practices, Waste to Wealth expert Mr. Gregory Ohiaeri has called upon President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and all State governors to enact policies facilitating the local production of feed from organic waste.
During an exclusive interview with Radio Nigeria, Mr. Ohiaeri, Managing Director of “Waste to Table Limited,” emphasized the importance of converting organic waste into valuable resources such as fertilizers, animal feed, and methane gas for power generation.
Highlighting the potential impact of such policies, Mr. Ohiaeri stressed that they would not only reduce farming costs but also lead to increased yield and enhanced food security nationwide.
One of the key issues addressed was the soaring cost of feed, which has been detrimental to small-scale farmers. Mr. Ohiaeri emphasized the urgent need for intervention to ensure the sustainability of agricultural businesses and the affordability of food for Nigerians.
Tests conducted on the animal feed and fertilizers produced at the Waste to Table facility in Lagos demonstrated their high quality and nutritional value, with animals fed on these products showing promising results.
Mr. Ohiaeri outlined his vision to franchise Waste to Table across all states in Nigeria, with plans to establish waste conversion plants in Ogun and Abia States by 2024. He underscored the importance of government support in facilitating these initiatives and emphasized the potential for job creation, particularly among youth, in the waste-to-wealth sector.
Furthermore, Mr. Ohiaeri highlighted the environmental benefits of waste conversion, particularly in mitigating methane emissions, a significant contributor to climate change. By capturing methane gas from organic waste and converting it into electricity, waste conversion plants can help reduce pollution and build a more resilient society.
As part of their efforts, Waste to Table operates a state-of-the-art facility in Lagos, where methane gas generated from organic waste is utilized to power electricity generators, demonstrating the practical application of sustainable practices.
Looking ahead, Mr. Ohiaeri called for government policies to support waste segregation at the source and provide access to land for waste processing facilities. These measures, he argued, are essential for streamlining waste management processes and promoting sustainable agricultural practices nationwide.
The Waste to Table facility in Lagos serves as a testament to the potential of waste conversion, with ponds stocked with catfish fingerlings and various livestock used for testing the efficacy of the products produced.
