Development Bank of Nigeria plants 3,000 trees to combat desertification

The Development Bank of Nigeria (DBN) has planted 3,000 trees as part of its efforts to combat desertification and climate change. This initiative aligns with the bank’s commitment to environmental sustainability and marks its contribution to the 2023 World Environment Day.

Research highlights deforestation as a critical issue affecting human survival, welfare, and development. Abdullahi et al.’s 2017 paper, “Deforestation, Desert Encroachment, Climate Change and Agricultural Production in the Sudano-Sahelian Region of Nigeria,” underscores Nigeria’s alarming rate of desertification, one of the highest globally. Another study by Ogunwale (2015) emphasizes deforestation as a significant long-term environmental challenge, with Nigeria experiencing an annual deforestation rate of 55.7% for primary forests.

DBN’s tree planting initiative reflects its belief that environmental sustainability is a shared responsibility. The bank aims to mitigate climate change, improve air quality, and enhance biodiversity in communities. “As the world grapples with pressing environmental challenges, this tree planting initiative will serve as a shining example of corporate leadership and sustainable action,” the bank stated.

The initiative also underscores DBN’s broader sustainability efforts, including the integration of environmental, social, and governance principles into its business operations. The bank seeks to align its activities with global best practices and contribute to the green transition in Nigeria’s economic landscape.

The Nigerian Conservation Foundation’s Director General, Joseph Onoja, praised DBN for promoting a greener, sustainable environment. Represented by Uchenna Achunine, the Director of Business Development and Communications, Onoja highlighted the importance of fostering a culture of environmental responsibility. “This tree planting project is an act of sowing the seeds for a more resilient, green future that benefits both people and the planet,” he said.

DBN’s past projects for World Environment Day include donating receptacles for recyclable waste in several states, launching Green Clubs in schools, and landscaping selected school grounds. The bank also educates students on recycling and responsible environmental behaviors, aiming to nurture and protect the planet.
