Surge in electric vehicle demand great benefit to environment -Expert
Dr. Sam Faleye, the Chief Executive Officer of SAGLEV, an electric vehicle manufacturing company, has highlighted a significant rise in the demand for electric vehicles (EVs) in Nigeria, driven primarily by environmental and economic factors.
Faleye explained that despite SAGLEV’s annual production capacity of 2,400 cars, demand far exceeds supply. Even with potential expansion to produce 7,000 cars per year, meeting the current demand remains a challenge.
Environmental and Economic Challenges
Faleye attributed the growing interest in EVs to the dual pressures of high fuel prices and maintenance costs for traditional fuel-powered vehicles. The cost of fuel and the environmental impact of internal combustion engines have made electric vehicles an attractive alternative. EVs offer a solution to these problems by eliminating the need for fuel and reducing maintenance expenses.
Global Shift Towards Electric Vehicles
Globally, countries are increasingly transitioning from fuel-powered to electric vehicles, recognizing their potential to reduce environmental pollution and reliance on fossil fuels. This shift is mirrored in Nigeria, where high fuel prices and maintenance costs have made EVs a more viable and sustainable option.
Economic and Environmental Benefits of EVs
Faleye pointed out the multiple benefits of switching to electric vehicles, including significant reductions in fuel costs and environmental impact. EVs are more efficient and environmentally friendly than their fuel and diesel-powered counterparts. They also offer economic advantages by lowering maintenance costs due to their simpler mechanical structure, which lacks components like carburetors and crankshafts.
Addressing Affordability and Charging Concerns
While the initial cost of EVs remains a concern, Faleye emphasized that electric vehicles are more affordable in the long run. He compared the price of SAGLEV’s brand-new EVs, particularly those designed for Uber drivers, which cost between N22 million to N23 million, to a brand-new Toyota Corolla, priced at around N35 million to N40 million. Additionally, the maintenance costs for EVs are about 50% less than for internal combustion engine vehicles.
Innovative Solutions for Charging Infrastructure
Addressing concerns about charging infrastructure, Faleye assured that EVs do not require frequent charging. A fully charged EV can travel up to 300 kilometers, with most users needing to charge their vehicles only once a week. SAGLEV is also installing multiple charging points across Lagos to facilitate the transition to electric vehicles.
Job Creation and Training Initiatives
The adoption of electric vehicles is also creating job opportunities. SAGLEV, for example, has employed 18 certified EV technicians and plans to set up certified automotive shops with trained technicians for maintenance and repairs. The company is also focused on training more teachers to educate future EV technicians, ensuring a sustainable workforce for the emerging EV market.
Environmental Impact
Faleye stressed the environmental benefits of EVs, noting that they do not emit gases like traditional vehicles, making them more environmentally friendly. The transition to electric vehicles can significantly reduce air pollution, contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment.
By focusing on these environmental and economic benefits, SAGLEV aims to drive the adoption of electric vehicles in Nigeria, promoting a sustainable future while addressing the pressing issues of high fuel prices and maintenance costs.
