Hippo kills fisherman in Kebbi
A fisherman, Malam Usman Mai Gadi, tragically lost his life yesterday after being attacked by a hippopotamus while fishing at Yauri River in Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
Eyewitnesses reported that the hippo, which had recently given birth, may have perceived the fisherman as a threat to its calf, leading it to attack in defense.
Before his death, Malam Usman worked as a watchman for the Emir of Yauri’s Orchard Farms and supplemented his income through fishing.
In response to the incident, Governor Nasir Idris expressed his condolences in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Alhaji Ahmed Idris. The governor extended sympathies to the deceased’s family, the Emir of Yauri, and the entire Yauri community. He also prayed for the repose of Malam Usman’s soul.
The late fisherman has been laid to rest according to Islamic rites.
On average, it is estimated that at least 500 people lose their lives to hippo attacks in Africa each year.
Hippos are considered one of the most dangerous animals on the continent due to their territorial nature, aggressive behavior, and large size. They often attack boats or people who come too close to their habitat, especially in rivers and lakes.
