FG combats dog ticks in Edo, distributes insecticides

To address tick infestation in dog kennels in Edo State, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has provided knapsack sprayers and insecticides to the Edo State chapter of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA).

The distribution, which took place on Friday, 18th October, in Benin City, received positive responses from the NVMA and local dog owners.

Dr. Samuel Owoicho, the Ministry’s Edo State Coordinator, handed over the items during the NVMA’s monthly meeting in Benin. He explained that the donation aligns with the ministry’s efforts to control tick infestations in dog kennels through the use of knapsack sprayers and insecticides.

Owoicho stressed the importance of cooperation between the ministry and the NVMA to ensure effective control of ticks and other animal diseases, highlighting the negative effects ticks have on both animal health and the livestock sector.

He reaffirmed the ministry’s dedication to supporting NVMA’s initiatives aimed at improving animal health and welfare.

“The ministry has also provided resources such as Android phones, human and animal anti-rabies vaccines, and capacity building for members in the state,” he said.

“These efforts are geared towards promoting animal health, welfare, and disease surveillance,” Owoicho added.

NVMA Chairman, Dr. Daniel Asemota, expressed his gratitude to the Federal Government for the support, noting that it would significantly help in combating tick infestations in dog kennels across Edo State.
