Excerpts:

When did you start keeping dogs?

I started keeping dogs when I was 12, and they have been fantastic ever since.

What do you find special about them?
The way they cling to their owners and how possessive they are is very fascinating.

How easy is it to keep dogs in this economy?

Their food and medical care require budget. Once you make provision for that, it becomes manageable, even in tough economic times.

There are quacks parading as vets these days. How do you advise dog owners on this costly menace?

Pet owners should educate themselves about basic care. Some simple, homemade self-help practices are available to maintain a healthy dog. This can reduce dependence on quacks.

How do you prevent your pets from zoonotic diseases?

My dogs are mostly indoors. Their walks are strictly supervised, and I ensure regular treatments with multivitamins and proper grooming.

Does that mean you don’t involve vets or administer anti-rabies injections?

Of course I do. I administer all necessary vaccines and treatments. I have a dedicated vet who comes around when needed.

What has been your experience taking them to the vet?

I only take my dogs to the clinic in emergency cases so they don’t pick up infections. For instance, I once battled ticks for weeks after a clinic visit. My dogs are Lhasa and very hairy, so I didn’t notice until grooming time. I was livid. Since then, I avoid clinics except when absolutely necessary.

How do your family members relate to dogs?

They have no problem with dogs, but they prefer smaller breeds. That’s why I stick to Lhasa—no big dogs are allowed.

What’s your message to dog owners on this International Dog Day?

To every dog owner: remember that keeping your pet healthy also keeps your family and community safe. Vaccinate your dogs regularly, provide proper care, and avoid letting them roam freely. Responsible ownership is the best way to prevent zoonotic diseases like rabies and to ensure that both humans and animals thrive together.
